Technological Innovation for the Internet of Things

Centered on a timely and relevant theme of 'Technological Innovation for the Internet of Things', the 4th Doctoral Conference on Computing, Electrical and Industrial Systems (DoCEIS’13), brings the importance of Internet of Things (IoT) under the spotlight. The Internet and mobile connectivity together with the vision of the IoT promises exciting challenges for researchers and industry and benefits for society. The IoT is an integrated part of Future Internet and could be defined as a dynamic global network infrastructure with self configuring capabilities based on standard and interoperable communication protocols, enabling the interlinking of the physical world with the cyberspace.

A key challenge for successful usage of IoT in the future is to identify the various areas which will be influenced by or contribute to the future development of the Internet of Things - energy efficient communication, scalable architectures of networks, bio-inspired algorithms, energy-aware systems, energy harvesting, smart and micro devices, biomedical devices, service triggered security, self-organizing systems, distributed decision making, collaborative networks and ecosystems, connected machines and robotics, remote operation and supervision, collective adaptive systems, nano-electronics, etc.

DoCEIS’ 13 is aimed as an international forum for presentation of research results coming out of PhD works, and a space for discussion of post-graduation studies, PhD thesis plans, and practical aspects of a PhD work. Among other activities, it includes:

Presentation of research results by PhD students (co-authored by their supervisors)

Tutorials by invited experts on scientific, methodological, or soft skills topics.

Presentation and discussion of the base ideas of the thesis plans.

Discussion of the scientific and technical challenges in the several Electrical and Computer Engineering specialization areas.

Sharing of experiences among PhD students from different regions.

Forum on practical aspects (e.g. Publications, job market, careers, etc.).

Creation of collaborative (social) networks.

Prospective authors of research papers are invited to submit their manuscripts reporting original work, in any of the scientific areas of the conference. Papers describing advanced prototypes, systems, tools and techniques and general survey papers indicating future directions are also encouraged.

Following the successful previous editions, proceedings are expected to be published by Springer, IFIP AICT series (indexed in Web of Science). Best papers will be considered for possible inclusion in a special journal issue.

There will be also poster discussion sessions regarding thesis plans. These sessions are designed in order to provide early feedback to PhD candidates in the initial phase of their studies.
